No CBN (and no rain) but GREAT original music with the Heavy Pets!

Roxy’s 10-2 is one of the few local venues that host one of the hottest jam bands in the country, the Heavy Pets. (Are their fans called PetHeads?) They’ve played festivals such as Langerado Music Festival with the likes of  Ben Harper, The Flaming Lips, G Love, and Robert Randolph.  You could have heard them at Bonnaroo, moe.downWakarusa Music and Camping Festival, Gathering of the Vibes, and the High Sierra Music Festival. Though they tour the country year round, Roxy’s nabs them nearly monthly.  Enjoy the video, then plan to catch their next show.

There haven’t been a lot of South Florida bands that catch my attention like the Heavy Pets.  I first heard them at the Bamboo Room in Lake Worth, but this video is shot at Roxy’s in DOwntown West Palm (for  These guys are worth triple the $5 cover charge that Roxy’s charges (and I avoided), and can go head to head with bands like Umphrey’s McGee (my current favorite band), Phish, and StringCheese Incident.

Unlike some of the great originators of the Jam Band (like the Dead and Allman Bros) the Heavy Pets mix up the jams more vigorously with tempo and style changes, and a 12 minute jam might have elements of reggae, disco, rock and a bit of country thrown in.  The two lead guitars can trade licks with anyone out there, and the accomplished keyboard player shares lead vocals with both guitarists and gives the band the ability to blend in immaculate harmonies with searing instrumental solo lines. The bass and drums are locked into every groove, handling complicated turns and tempo changes with ease.

EVEN IF (you think) you’re not a fan of “jam bands,” catch one of the Heavy Pet’s shows! They’ll win you over!
